10/27/2025 0 Comments Marge Hall Flower Painting WorkshopWe learned so much this Saturday from Marge Hall! Some of us learned how much better oil paints are for the subtle blending an artist needs for photorealistic flowers.
Marge wowed us by giving a quick and easy tutorial on how to make dewdrops. I think our work is going to be bedazzled with dewdrops until we get the novelty of it out of our systems! Marge reminded us that if we are unsure of the value of an area in piece to make a viewfinder out of a piece of paper or card and compare the area with your subject or photograph you are painting. Marge says she paints flowers exclusively from photographs because her work takes a long time to paint and the flower would wilt before it was done. She also saves time and blocks out the composition by projecting her subject onto the canvas and sketching the outline. She recommends that we use acrylic paint to block out the background in the early stages because it dries quickly. The method of removing the white background early will help with keep your values under control. It was a such a pleasure to meet and learn from such a respected and accomplished artist!

October 25, 2025--MARGE HALL "Create Magnificent Florals in Oil or Acrylic". 12:30-3:30 pm. Registration Fee: $40 AAG Members/$55 non-members.
A native of Chicago, Marge Hall has called Winfield, Illinois home since 1971. She earned a degree in Commercial Art from Southern Illinois University’s Vocational Technical Institute in 1966 and began her career as a package designer. After taking time off to raise her four sons, Marge returned to painting for personal enjoyment—a passion that grew into teaching oil painting at the DuPage Art League in Wheaton, where her popular classes are known for her personal attention, enthusiasm, and encouragement. In 1992, a two-day workshop in Long Grove inspired Marge to explore large-scale floral oil paintings. Using high-contrast photographs as references, she intensifies color temperature and builds up multiple layers of paint, creating works with a luminous, almost glowing presence. Her work is “photo realistic” and extremely vivid. The petals of her flowers seem to lift off the canvas, radiating warmth and tranquility. These vivid, oversized florals invite viewers to pause, breathe, and simply feel good. Meet Dale Olsen: "I got my start in the art world, at the age of 4 by using a red crayon on the black and white wallpaper in my home. My parents, while not exactly appreciative, fostered and encouraged the talent they sensed in me. I have switched to more appropriate surfaces for my work. I am intrigued by edges, where water meets land, where snow meets the treeline, where shadows meet sunlight. I seek to give the viewer a sense of peace and a sense of majesty, sometimes in a broad landscape or in the petal of a flower. As an architect, I have been able to bring scale, proportion and draftsmanship to my work as an artist. My landscapes have been included in the inaugural exhibition of Oil Painters of America and been awarded an honorable mention for landscape by the Artist’s Magazine. Landscape, floral and automotive works have received awards in local competitions. In addition to painting, I offer professional services in color consultation, murals, faux finishing and stained glass design."
